How to Create a Writing Routine that Supports your Business Goals
The writing routine that moves the needle in your business
When I say business, it could be your freelance writing business, a startup, or a small business.
Writing for these businesses can bring in connections, traffic, leads, or sales.
Yet, without a plan, you might get burnt out, lose interest, or experience writer’s block.
So, let’s talk about a writing routine that can prevent these and help you achieve your business goals.
TL;DR:
How to create a writing routine that supports your business goals;
✅ Decide why you want to write
✅ Save your ideas
✅ Pick a writing time
✅ Batch-create
✅ Track what’s working
1. Decide why you want to Write
Before writing, ask, “What do I want this to do for my business?”
Do you want more leads? Is it to build authority, increase trust, or sell?
For instance, I write to gain visibility, network, and attract my ideal clients.
When your goal is clear, you get the push to take the next steps.
2. Save your Ideas
Take notes on topics you want to write about.
Is it about your journey as a writer or business owner? Do you want to teach others something?
You could save your ideas on Google Docs using an approach I call the Dumpsite Technique.
Also, you could your structured ideas on a content calendar.
Then, create an outline for each topic. Add 2-3 supporting points and a call-to-action.
Drop a comment if you need a content calendar
3. Pick a Writing Time
Identify when you’d prefer to write. Is it in the morning, in the day, or at night?
Then, pick a schedule to work with. Are you going to write after checking your mail in the morning? After lunch or before bedtime?
This can help you build consistency.
4. Batch-Create
You don’t have to write every day. Instead, you can write once and let it serve you for a period. Maybe a week.
For example:
You can find time to transcribe interviews you conducted into blog posts, carousels, or infographics.
Build the ideas you have outlined.
Pick a time to edit, create matching visuals (when necessary), and schedule them.
This will help you show up consistently, overcome writers’ block, and gain your audience’s trust.
5. Track what’s Working
…and what’s not.
Measure your performance weekly or monthly.
Check which post(s) brought in the most conversions (DMs, clicks, engagement, traffic, or sales) that you wanted.
Then, let the insights gathered influence your next writing step.
By implementing these steps, you’ll build a writing routine that’ll help you achieve your business goals.
